In Which We Explore a Day in the Life

Well, we've reached the halfway point of the week, and essentially the halfway point of the Blog Every Day in May challenge! Blogging every day thus far has certainly been a challenge, but I've really enjoyed it. Today's theme is "A Day in the Life". Here we go!

Ken's alarm goes off sometime between 5:45 and 6:00, and my first alarm goes off shortly after that. I'm usually awake already when it goes off. I lay in bed, check the weather, contemplate sleeping until my next alarm, and usually get out of bed by 6:25 or 6:30, when Ken is leaving for work. I like to hug and kiss him goodbye before he leaves, and it helps me get out the door at a reasonable hour if I'm up and moving before he leaves.

Becoming human! The make-up routine has been reduced to this lately, since my skin has been freaking out (thanks, autoimmune disease). The dermatologist said I needed to up my skin protection from 30 to 75 or higher, so I dug out the sunblock that I used to reserve for beach days. Apparently, now it's every day! FitMe (Shade 110) is the only powder that I've found that's light enough for my freakishly pale skin, which means that Maybelline should stop making it any second now. The brow wax and powder are from Benefit Brow, which I picked up at Ulta recently after discovering the Brow Bar (new favorite thing... totally worth the extra expense). I started curling my eyelashes a few years ago, and I've found that it makes all the difference in my face. Without the curler or the mascara, I look diseased and exhausted, and with it... slightly less so, haha.

7:29 and I'm in my car, getting gas. Yes, the clock says 7:38, but I run it 9 minutes fast (which I usually forget). I try to leave by 7:05, because the traffic into Philadelphia starts to get nuts after that. This morning, I had to stop for gas which put me a little behind, but I still got to the parking lot by 7:45. I hopped on the shuttle and headed to work (it's way cheaper to park off campus!)

Circa 8:15 - The first stop after putting my bag down in my office is the Keurig. It inevitably needs to be filled, so I sometimes do that (because I'm considerate like that). Monday was a particularly horrible morning because someone had stolen/thrown out the rest of my creamer! It definitely hadn't expired, and there was a quarter cup of creamer left but poof, it was gone. Fortunately, I found some creamer cups from Wawa in the communal portion of the fridge (which is not where my creamer, with my initials on it, was stored!) Regardless, coffee. It's necessary.

Circa 9:30 - After making my coffee, I usually do my Byetta injection and then settle in at my desk for breakfast. Today, it was dry Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Yes, I'm a weirdo and I eat most of my cereal without milk. In fact, the only one I eat with milk is Crispix. So yes, coffee and cereal. And...

8 to 5 - Email! Most of the stuff that's there when I open my Outlook is useless stuff from IS (This broke, we fixed it! This is broken, we don't know why, don't use it!) or random reminders about grand rounds. I like to purge the useless stuff before the day gets started.

8 to 5 - Getting down to business! Since I can't take photos of the medical records that abstract (because that's WAY illegal), here are some forms that I created for various disease groups. They're still in the works, as you can see the edits all over the place. Other work things that I do during the day include answering phone calls, entering data into databases, editing databases, answering various questions, writing emails, consenting patients, going to meetings, organizing meetings, tracking down tissue/blood/marrow samples, and a million other things.

8 to 5 - I'm kind of in love with Spotify, and I'm especially obsessed with Joshua Radin's new album, Wax Wings. I think I've listened to it at least a 2-3 times a day since it was released on May 7th. Other current, favorite, playlists include my Sara Bareilles playlist, Ingrid Michaelson playlist, and Regina Spektor's latest album, "What We Saw From the Cheap Seats".

12:30 - Lunch time! I usually bring my lunch, but we really need to go grocery shopping.  I keep some Campbell's "Soup on the Go" in my desk, but today I was seriously craving a salad (and a soft pretzel, not pictured). I'm usually not so excited by salads, but today I was thrilled. Mixed greens, spinach, cucumbers, carrots, edamame, grilled chicken, cheese, and croutons. Best part? None of it made me feel sick (unusual, given my random food allergies to everything, especially raw stuff). I also was super full for the rest of the day. Go team fiber!
Around 4:00, I realized that I forgot my gym bag, which led to me writing myself this note and sticking it to my face (not pictured).  I've been paying for a gym membership forever and was unable to use it for the last few months because I've been so sick and decrepit. I was finally going to get to my pilates class tonight and apparently, packing a gym bag and putting it in my car was beyond me at 6:45 this morning.

5:15 - Hello, car! You can't tell, but it's disgustingly covered in pollen and sorely needs a bath. My dad and I bought this car in 2007 (I put the money down, he made the payments) and he just paid it off this January... so now it's mine! Well, ours. I love it, and it makes me so happy... even though I just had to put $1200 into maintenance (stupid timing belt/coolant system/spark plugs/tire/oil change). Oh well. As my dad says, "You take care of your car, and it takes care of you." It better, because this baby has to last me through med school!

6:30 - Took forever to get home (thanks inexplicable traffic), but I remembered to stop at the library and pick up the books that I put on hold yesterday. I've been wanting to read Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking and The Fault in Our Stars for months now, but somehow never got around to requesting them from the library. A friend of mine recently posted Sharp Objects on her Goodreads, and it looked interesting. I don't read a lot of fiction, so I figured I was due. Also, I never read Gone Girl... is it worth it? I've heard fabulous things. Let me know. Anyway, books!

 6:45 - Got home, hugged and kissed the husband, and hung out with these guys for awhile. Clearly, it's very taxing being adorable all day, so they needed to rest. And yes, Gershwin sits with his paws crossed all the time. No idea why. He's classy. Also, Luna has claimed that pillow (that is actually a blanket that folds up into a pillow like magic) as her own.

7:00 - Ugh, this is a part of my life again. I only spent about half an hour on it tonight, but man, I still hate physics. And the MCAT. And standardized tests in general. BLERGH. Also around 7, I did my second Byetta injection. On display are my pills for the evening, which I take before bed.

7:30 - Dinner! Fishsticks, because I am 5 and we also have about 48 pounds of leftovers in the fridge, so Ken had eaten some of those when he got hungry (way before I did, thanks to the giant salad from lunch).

 9:00 - Red wine, because... well, just because. Also, Criminal Minds! So You Think You Can Dance was also on tonight, but that's what the DVR is for, right?

And now it's 10:17, I still somehow have not finished my wine (whoops), and I need to go to bed so I can do this all again tomorrow. Whee?

  2. Ha! I love that you wrote yourself a note. Girl, you get to the GYM! Just do it. Also, what instrument are you holding in your profile pic? I can't tell... viola? I'm a violin player myself. Woo for orchestra!

    Also, way to identify a viola! I've played for... holy crap, 16 years! Do you still play?
