In Which We Talk About Happiness

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Yay, it's no longer Monday! That's a pretty good reason to be happy, right? The prompt for today's post of Blog Every Day in May is "Ten Things That Make You Happy", which is pretty fun and is definitely a nice thing to focus on when most of the time, my brain is in disaster-management mode. So, here are some things to be happy about today, and I'll list ten general things that make me happy.

  • First up, the fact that it's not Monday makes me very happy. Unless I am laying on a beach somewhere fabulous, or in my bed, Mondays are the absolute worst.
  • Also, the fact that I don't have 40,000 bees in my wall makes me REALLY, REALLY, happy.
  • Ken and I put an application in for another condo that we really like. The landlord seems like a normal human being (and apparently, he went to my high school...?) and it's a lovely place. Whee!
  • On Friday, I'm hanging out with Liz of Happy Sighs. She's one of my favorite people. On Saturday, I'm hanging out with a friend from high school who I haven't seen in a very long time. YAY!
  • I start class on Monday. This is alternately thrilling and terrifying, but we're going to focus on the happy part of that.

Ten Things That Make Me Happy

1. Ken - He is seriously one of the best people I have ever had the blessing of having in my life. He balances me and my extremely high-strung proclivities, which is something that is vitally important to my sanity. He makes me laugh every day. He supports me in everything that I do and believes in me and my goals, even when I don't. He takes care of me when I'm sick and decrepit (which is often) and is the best partner I could ever imagine. I'm so thankful that he's my husband, my friend, and a part of my life.

Bottom: Gershwin
 2. My cats - These guys are responsible for much of the joy in my life. I adopted Gershwin when he was a 2 pound, orange, fuzzball in the shelter, and he took to sleeping in the crook of my shoulder/neck. Now that he's 20 pounds, he still tries to sleep there. He has the soul of a kitten in a giant, snuggly, cat body, and he's one of the most affectionate animals I've ever met. Luna is very sweet, and I adopted her when she was 4 months old. I was living in FL and Gershwin seemed lonely, so I brought him a kitten. He was originally less than thrilled, but he came around, and now they snuggle all the time. Luna is much more a spaz than Gershwin, but she's very loving and has the cutest, little, kitten meow that I've ever heard. There's nothing better than coming home to these furballs after a long day.

A wee fraction of my Goodreads list

3. Books/reading - I learned to read when I was 3, and I haven't stopped devouring books since. I was that weird kid in school who would rather read at recess than do anything else, and when the teacher told us to "Drop Everything and Read" (did anyone else have D.E.A.R. books?), I was thrilled. Over the summers, my Mom-Mom would take me to the library, I'd take out 10-15 books (like, legitimate, actual, books) and have them all done in 2-4 weeks. I love being transported somewhere else by stories, and as I've gotten older, I've fallen more and more in love with non-fiction. In fact, I would say that at least 70% of what I read is non-fiction. If that makes me a nerd, then I am totally okay with that. (PS - If you ever need to get me a present and you have no idea what to get me, a gift card to a bookstore is always a safe bet. Or, if you'd rather...)

YARN! My favorite shop in Philly is Loop. If you're local, check it out!
4. Yarn/knitting - I learned to knit when I was 7, then promptly forgot and relearned when I was in college. So far, I've only knit scarves and a bag, but I my last project was an ear-warmer (I should finish that...) and I have dreams of starting (and subsequently finishing) a sweater. Going to yarn stores is one of my favorite things, and (most of the time), I find knitting very relaxing.|

My favorite people in this world*
*Minus a few, because there isn't a collage large enough to contain them

5. My best friends - This is kind of obvious, but I seriously do not know how I would get through life without these people, and that's not even everyone that I could count in that group! Without these folks, I surely would have gone off the deep end by now. Without a doubt, I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have such amazing friends.

 6. Chocolate - It's not quite an obsession, but I seriously adore chocolate. Even on the worst days, a little chocolate can help me feel better.

7. Coffee - Every morning, I make myself a cup of coffee when I get to work and it makes me so happy to sip on the warm deliciousness as I start my day. I also love the social aspect of coffee. Some of my favorite nights involve Starbucks and sitting around for hours, chatting with friends while we indulge in caffeinated goodness.

8. Sleep/my bed - There are few things I love more than my bed. Even if I'm not asleep, just being in my bed, in my pajamas or comfy clothes, makes me really happy. I read, surf the internet, watch TV or movies, snuggle the cats and/or the husband, talk on the phone... it's a very relaxing place and I love it.

9. Laughing so hard you can't breathe - This is just one event in millions that I've had with Sarah in which we laughed so hard we couldn't breathe. This has also happened with plenty of other people (namely the ones listed in the friends collage above), but there is nothing like a good giggle fit to make you feel wonderful and happy. (For those of you who are interested, we were laughing hysterically at my fear of the sparkler.)

My first college, Wittenberg University
10. Autumn - It's my favorite season! I love the falling temperatures (even though I hate being cold), the gorgeous leaves, the lack of pollen... just to name a few things, haha. We were married on October 14th on a gorgeous fall day, which was amazing. This photo is of one of the best places I've experience fall, which is on the campus of Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH (oddly). I met two of my best friends in the world there (Sarah and Emily!) and the campus is gorgeous.

So there are ten things that make me happy (in general) and some more specific things that are making me happy today. I hope that none of you have 40,000 bees in your wall, and that you all have at least ten things in your life that make you happy. Check out what makes everyone else happy at the link up!

  1. Well, that font makes it look like a very sick and decrepit heart.

I was sending you a perfectly formed heart, not a sick and decrepit one.

  2. What a great list!! You're right, by the way, there are few things better than laughing until you can't breathe.

  3. This is such a great list! I love the picture of Wittenberg. I went to Ohio University in Athens, which is also an amazing place in the fall, but Wittenberg is equally stunning!

Leave me a note! I always reply and I love meeting other bloggers!
