Hi there! Thanks for coming to visit Mind Over Mother, a blog about medicine, motherhood, mental health, and more. Yes, even things that don't begin with the letter M.

I'm Alison, I'm 32, and I live near Allentown, PA. I'm a first year pediatrics resident and with any luck, I'm going to be a pediatric oncologist when I grow up. I'm a wife to Ken and a mama to Aviva, who we welcomed to the world on June 22, 2016. You might say I'm a little busy.

I started this blog in October of 2012, right after Ken and I got married. I wanted to write about marriage, relationships, medicine, and mental health, which I mostly did, with the occasional life update thrown in every now and then. The blog that is Mind Over Mother didn't crystallize until I began medical school, and until very recently (like, approximately an hour ago), it was Simply A. However, since absolutely nothing about life is simple, it didn't truly fit the vibe of the blog or my life.

When I got pregnant after a lot of loss and grief, I was determined that I was not going to "lose myself" to motherhood. I was still going to be me; the med student, the future pediatrician, the mental health advocate, the wife, the friend. The title Mind Over Mother doesn't mean that I view motherhood as a second-choice vocation; quite the opposite, actually. Becoming a mom has changed me in unimaginable ways, many of which I have written about and about which I will continue to write. Rather, Mind Over Mother begins to get at the idea of layers. That sometimes, different identities shift from day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute, even. People are complicated; life, doubly so.

So welcome. Ask questions. Let's explore the layers.

  1. So I found you through Blogtember and I have to say that you are hilarious. And I also love llamas. I look forward to reading more from you!

  3. Hi Alison! I'm not sure if you're active on your blog anymore but I find it such a strange coincidence that I found it today. I'm currently applying, very very late, to DO programs and I live in Mullica Hill, NJ! I started reading your posts and I feel like I understand so much where you're coming from. Your story is so super inspiring and I hope, after I'm done these horrible applications, to read more of your posts.
    Warm regards,

    1. Hey Maxine! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I haven't updated in awhile, but I'm planning on getting back to it soon. Good luck with your applications!!
